How did we pick these free design tools?

We ranked tools by what the free plan lets you finish without paying. Each pick needed a free plan, not just a trial, with limits stated on the vendor’s own pricing page. We then weighed breadth of use, how fast a free user hits the limit and privacy of the free workflow.

Our rules:

  1. Free forever, not a trial. A short Pro trial does not count as the free plan.
  2. Limits from the vendor. Design caps, storage and credit rules come from each pricing or product page.
  3. Official pages only. Nothing here comes from review sites.
  4. Ranking is editorial. We compared published plan limits; we did not pen-test every editor.

What are the best free design tools in 2026?

1. Canva: best overall free design tool

Canva Free is the most complete free design plan we checked. It includes a drag-and-drop editor with 1,000+ design types, 1.6M+ templates, 4.7M+ photos, videos, graphics and audio, 1 Brand Kit limited to 3 colors, access to Affinity, 5GB of cloud storage and up to 20 Standard or Premium AI uses.

The limit you hit first is brand control: one Brand Kit with 3 colors is enough for a side project, not a company. Canva Pro is US$144 per year for one person on Canva’s U.S. pricing page (about $12 per month). Canva Business is US$250 per year per person. See our Canva vs Figma comparison.

2. Figma: best free tool for UI and product design

Figma’s Starter plan is free and gives “free limited access to Figma products.” It includes unlimited drafts, UI kits and templates, and 150 AI credits per day up to 500 AI credits per month. Starter is the right free plan for designers who build interfaces rather than marketing graphics.

Teams pay per seat. On Figma Professional, a Collab seat is $3, a Dev seat is $12 and a Full seat is $16 per month, with Full seats including 3,000 AI credits per month. Professional unlocks unlimited files and projects for a single team. See our Figma pricing page for the full seat table.

3. UI Discovery: best free UI reference library

UI Discovery’s Free plan is $0 forever. It lets you browse 6,545 websites and apps and 111,083 sections, see the palette and fonts for every site, and open 3 designs a day at full size with the AI prompt, code and a Build with AI option. Free also includes catalog search over API and MCP at 200 requests a day.

Pro costs $15 per month and adds unlimited designs, AI prompts and code, watermark-free downloads and design briefs over MCP for Cursor, Claude and Codex. Team costs $39 per month for 50,000 API requests a day. Annual billing gives two months free. UI Discovery says shared workspaces and extra seats are not available yet.

4. Blur Background: best free background blur tool

Blur Background’s Free Basic mode blurs photo backgrounds in your browser with no account or credits. It accepts JPG, PNG, WebP, HEIC and more up to 20 MB, and the site says Free Basic “does not automatically upload your photo.”

Anonymous users get 20 local attempts per 24 hours and signed-in free users get 30. Paid one-time packs unlock AI Refined processing: Starter is $2.99 for 10 images (about $0.30 each), Plus is $6.99 for 30 (about $0.23) and Creator is $12.99 for 60 (about $0.22). Purchased credits never expire, and there is no subscription.

5. Sharpniq: best free tool to unblur photos

Sharpniq’s Browser Free mode sharpens supported images on your own device with no sign-in, using 0 credits; images “stay in the current browser tab.” Cloud Unblur is optional and uses 10 credits per usable result. New accounts get 10 free credits, enough for 1 Cloud Unblur result.

Paid packs are one-time purchases: Starter lists at $4.99 per pack (about $0.50 per Standard Unblur task) and Plus at $9.99 per pack (about $0.45 per task). Sharpniq says there are “no unlimited plans” and purchased credits do not expire.

Which tools have the most private free workflow?

Blur Background and Sharpniq process images on your device in their free modes. Blur Background says Free Basic does not automatically upload your photo. Sharpniq says Browser Free images stay in the current browser tab. Both switch to cloud processing only for paid or credit-based modes, after you confirm.

Canva and Figma are cloud editors, so your designs live in their accounts by design. UI Discovery lets you browse without an account; signing in syncs collections across devices.
