What is Confluence?

Confluence is Atlassian’s wiki and knowledge-base platform for organizing team documentation, meeting notes, product specs, and engineering references. Launched in 2004, it is the dominant documentation tool for engineering organizations already running on Jira. Atlassian serves over 300,000 customers across its Jira and Confluence products as of 2024. The Free plan supports up to 10 users; the Standard plan starts at $4.89 per user per month.

Confluence organizes content into Spaces — one per team, product, or department — and Pages within those spaces. The native Jira integration embeds issues, sprint boards, and release notes directly into Confluence pages without middleware. How does Confluence work?

Confluence structures documentation as a hierarchy: Spaces contain Pages, Pages nest under parent Pages up to five levels deep. Every page has a version history, inline commenting, @-mention notifications, and a label system for cross-space tagging. The platform model is top-down — you architect a space structure first, then fill pages in.

Spaces and permissions

Each Space has its own permission model. You can open a Marketing space to the entire organization while locking an Engineering space to the engineering team with read-only access for others. Space-level permissions plus page-level restrictions give large organizations granular control over who sees what. Jira integration

Confluence’s native Jira integration is the product’s defining feature.
