How did we pick these free AI image generators?

We included only tools whose own site states a free plan, free daily or weekly allowance, or free creations, not a trial alone. We ranked them by how much image generation the free tier allows, how clear the limit is, whether you can edit uploaded photos, and how cheap the first upgrade is. AI Image Extender submitted through our submit form; we checked its site today and list it separately because it extends photos rather than generating from a prompt.

Every limit and price comes from the vendor’s official page on October 16, 2026. See our methodology and the wider AI image generation category.

What are the best free AI image generators in 2026?

1. Google Gemini: best free AI image generator overall

Gemini’s Free plan is $0 a month with a Google Account and lists “Image generation and editing.” Google says Nano Banana is “Available for free,” and its model table marks Nano Banana 2 (image generation and editing) as Free. Google AI Plus, Pro and Ultra subscribers get Nano Banana 2.1, which Google calls its best image model.

The first upgrade is Google AI Plus at $4.99 a month for 2x higher usage than Free. Google AI Pro is $19.99 a month for 4x higher usage. Use Gemini when you want free text-to-image plus edits to your own photos (change the lighting, camera angle or style) in one place. Google says image generation is available in every country and language where the Gemini app is available.

2. ChatGPT Free: best free generator inside a chat

ChatGPT’s Free plan is $0 a month and lists “Limited image creation” next to unlimited text chats. The image limit is not stated as a number, so expect to hit a cap on heavy days. Go is $8 a month and adds “More image creation” (Go may include ads). Plus is $20 a month with “More complex and accurate image creation.” Pro starts at $100 a month with “Unlimited and faster image creation.”

Use ChatGPT when you want to describe, refine and re-describe an image in conversation. Compare it with other assistants on ChatGPT alternatives.

3. Adobe Firefly free plan: best free generator for commercial design work

Adobe says: “You don’t need a plan to get free daily generations across image, video, and audio, with access to popular models like Nano Banana and Luma Ray3.14. Limits refresh every day.” The free allowance is daily, not monthly, which suits steady light use.

Paid Firefly plans start at Standard, US$9.99 a month with 2,000 generative credits, then Pro at US$19.99 (4,000 credits). Adobe says all paid plans include unlimited standard image and vector generations; credits go to premium features such as video, audio and partner models. Pick Firefly if you already work in Adobe apps and want a daily free allowance before you pay.

4. Leonardo AI Free: best daily free token budget

Leonardo’s Free plan is $0 a month with 150 fast tokens per day, a 150-token bank, public creations, presets, basic quality settings and one personal collection. Tokens reset daily for free users. Token cost depends on the model and settings, so Leonardo does not promise a fixed image count.

Essential is $12 a month on the monthly toggle, with 8,500 fast tokens a month and private creations. Leonardo says yearly billing saves up to 20%. On rights, Leonardo keeps the right to use free-tier images but grants free users a non-exclusive, royalty-free licence for commercial use. Full plan math is on Leonardo AI pricing.

5. Bing Image Creator: best free option for quick one-off images

Microsoft’s Bing Image Creator has a free allowance. When we loaded it today, the creator showed 10 free creations on the Fast setting and generated 4 images per prompt, with MAI-Image models listed. Microsoft Rewards points can be redeemed for boosts that speed up generation. There is no paid Image Creator plan on the page we fetched.

Use it for a fast batch of options when you do not need editing tools or a project library.

6. Canva Free: best free generator for images that go into a design

Canva Free is US$0 a year for one person. Its AI allowance is up to 20 uses of Standard or Premium AI tools, pooled across tools and reset monthly. “Create an image with Canva AI” is listed as a Standard AI tool. Canva Pro is US$144 a year for one person, with up to 200 Premium AI uses.

Pick Canva when the generated image is one layer of a social post, slide or flyer. See free design tools for Canva’s full free plan.

7. Ideogram: best weekly free credits

Ideogram says eligible free accounts receive weekly credits when signing in with Google, Apple or Microsoft, and that “the amount may vary.” Ideogram does not offer discounts or free trials on subscription plans. Plus is $20 a month monthly, or $15 a month billed annually ($180 a year), with 2,400 priority credits a month and unlimited slow credits.

Ideogram says it does not claim ownership of your generated images and you can use them for any purpose, including commercial use.

Does Midjourney have a free plan?

No. Midjourney’s plan comparison page says all Midjourney plans are subscriptions that renew monthly or yearly. Basic is $10 a month, or $96 a year ($8 a month) with the 20% annual discount, for 3.3 GPU hours of Fast time. Standard is $30, Pro is $60 and Mega is $120 a month. Companies with more than 1 million USD in yearly gross revenue must buy Pro or Mega. Midjourney is worth paying for when image quality matters more than cost; it is not a free option.

Is AI Image Extender a free AI image generator?

Partly. AI Image Extender expands existing photos to new aspect ratios rather than generating images from a text prompt. Its site says it is “free to try” with no sign-up required for your first expansions, and that Premium subscribers can expand up to 50 images in one batch. We did not quote its paid prices because the home page we fetched links to a separate pricing page. It submitted via /submit/; it is not ranked above because it is a single-purpose extender.
