Perplexity
The AI answer engine that cites every claim — the right tool for research, not conversation. Essential in this category.
The take
What is Perplexity?
Perplexity is an AI-powered answer engine that retrieves information from the live web and cites every source inline. Unlike ChatGPT or Claude, Perplexity is not designed for open-ended conversation — it is designed for research queries that require current, verifiable information.
The core design decision that differentiates Perplexity from every other AI chatbot is mandatory source citation. Every sentence in a Perplexity answer links to the web page it drew from. This makes it the fastest tool for fact-checking, current-events research, and competitive analysis. It sits at the center of the 80/20 of AI chatbots we cover alongside ChatGPT and Claude.
How does Perplexity work?
Perplexity combines a search index with a large language model. When you submit a query, the system retrieves current web results, passes them to the model as context, and generates a synthesized answer with inline citations. The model never fabricates a source — if it cites something, that URL exists and was retrieved. The synthesis can still be wrong (misrepresenting what the source says), but the source itself is always real and verifiable.
Focus modes
Perplexity’s focus modes let you search specific source types rather than the open web. Web (default) searches all indexed pages. Academic searches peer-reviewed research databases. YouTube finds and summarizes video content. Reddit searches forum discussions for real user opinions rather than SEO-optimized pages. Wolfram Alpha focus handles computation and math. Each mode significantly changes result quality for the right query type.
Copilot and Pro Search
Pro Search (called Copilot mode in some interfaces) runs a more thorough research pass. It asks clarifying questions before searching, runs multiple search queries, synthesizes across more sources, and can choose between different underlying models — GPT-4o, Claude Sonnet, or Perplexity’s own models. For complex research questions where the framing matters, Pro Search returns significantly better results than the default.
Collections and team research
Collections let you save, organize, and share research threads. A journalism team might maintain a Collection for an ongoing investigation, adding new queries and their cited answers over time. Collections are shareable via link, making Perplexity functional as a lightweight shared research repository. This feature set is available on Pro and is the main argument for team-level subscriptions.

Who uses Perplexity in 2026?
Journalists and researchers use Perplexity’s Academic and Web focus modes to build cited research briefs in minutes rather than hours. Competitive intelligence teams use it to track product announcements, pricing changes, and executive moves across competitor companies. Fact-checkers use it to trace claims back to primary sources. Financial analysts use Pro Search for current market data research with full source trails.
Standard search engines return ten links; Perplexity returns one cited answer.
When should you skip Perplexity?
Perplexity is the wrong choice in these scenarios.
- You need open-ended conversation and reasoning. ChatGPT and Claude are better for extended back-and-forth dialogue, brainstorming, and analysis that does not require web retrieval.
- You need persistent custom instructions or Custom GPTs. ChatGPT Projects and Custom GPTs provide reconfigurable AI workspaces Perplexity does not match.
How much does Perplexity cost?
Perplexity has a free plan. Paid plans start at $17 per month, per Perplexity’s official pricing page as of October 3, 2026. The captured page also advertised limited-time computer credits bundled with Pro and Max.
| Plan | Price (as captured) | Notes |

What are Perplexity’s key limitations?
Perplexity’s citations are real but not always authoritative. The system cites whatever ranks highly in its index — which includes SEO-optimized low-quality sources, outdated pages, and pages that rank for the query term without being the primary authority on the topic. Citing a source does not mean the source is correct. For any claim that matters, read the cited source directly and evaluate its credibility independently.
The synthesis layer introduces its own errors. Perplexity can misrepresent what a source actually says — picking a statistic without the surrounding context that changes its meaning, or summarizing a nuanced position as a categorical claim. The citation is real; the paraphrase may not be faithful. This problem is worse for complex academic or policy topics where source interpretation requires domain expertise.
Perplexity also lacks persistent memory and custom instructions. Every session starts fresh — there is no equivalent to ChatGPT’s memory system or Claude’s Projects for maintaining context across research sessions. Collections address this partially by saving threads, but they are not the same as a persistent AI assistant that remembers your research background.
How we evaluated Perplexity
Every fact on this page (pricing, plans, free-tier status and features) was captured from Perplexity’s official pages (about, home, integrations, pricing) on October 3, 2026 and checked against that capture before publishing. Claims we could not confirm on those pages were removed rather than guessed. The verdict and the when-to-use guidance are Priya Nair’s editorial judgment. See our evaluation methodology for how we score tools.
Strengths & trade-offs
What earns the score
- Every answer cites its sources — you can verify claims immediately without leaving the interface
- Real-time information is its core design, not an add-on feature
- Focus modes let you search specific source types (Reddit, YouTube, academic) in one interface
- Clean, fast interface with no advertising
Where it falls short
- Not built for conversational back-and-forth — weaker than ChatGPT or Claude for extended dialogue
- Source quality varies widely — Perplexity cites whatever ranks, not necessarily authoritative sources
- No persistent memory or custom instruction sets across sessions
- Image generation not available
- Copilot mode limits on free tier are restrictive for heavy users

Frequently asked questions
How much does Perplexity cost?
Perplexity Free gives you standard search. Max is $167/month billed annually for the highest usage and most advanced reasoning models.
Is Perplexity better than Google for research?
For multi-step research questions, yes — Perplexity synthesizes across multiple sources and returns a single cited answer rather than a list of links to click. For finding a specific page, Google is still faster. Use both: Google for navigation, Perplexity for synthesis.
How accurate is Perplexity compared to ChatGPT?
Perplexity's citations are verifiable in real time, which makes fact-checking faster than ChatGPT where you have to verify claims independently. Perplexity still makes synthesis errors — it can misrepresent what a source actually says. Always read the cited source for any claim that matters. ChatGPT hallucinates plausible but uncited claims; Perplexity misattributes cited but real sources.
What is Perplexity's Copilot mode?
Copilot is Perplexity's guided research mode. Instead of returning a single answer, it asks clarifying questions to narrow your research intent, then runs multiple search passes to build a more comprehensive response. It's useful for open-ended research questions where the framing matters — less useful for specific factual lookups where the standard search mode is faster.
Can Perplexity search academic papers?
Yes. It returns citations with DOIs and direct links to abstracts. This is meaningfully better than a standard web search for scientific literature review, though it doesn't replace direct database access for systematic reviews requiring exhaustive coverage.
Does Perplexity have an API?
Yes. Perplexity's API provides access to its search-augmented language model for building applications. It's priced per token and supports online models (with real-time search) and offline models (without web access). The API is useful for building fact-checked AI features into products without managing a retrieval system. Documentation is at docs.perplexity.ai.
How does Perplexity compare to Claude for research tasks?
Perplexity beats Claude for real-time, cited research tasks — it retrieves current information and links sources by design. Claude beats Perplexity for analyzing documents you provide (200K context window) and for conversational back-and-forth reasoning. For research tasks, start with Perplexity to gather cited sources, then use Claude to reason deeply over what you've collected.
