What to do with this data

  1. Write for questions, not two-word heads. Pew’s trigger rates rise sharply for question-shaped and long queries.
  2. Measure citations, not only blue-link rank. An 8% click rate with an Overview is not the same as being named inside it. Use AI visibility tools or Mentionova.
  3. Treat news and publisher traffic as a separate risk. Cloudflare’s referral drops are for a news cohort; your category may differ.
  4. Prioritize trustworthy, citable pages. .gov and reference sources over-index in Overviews relative to classic results.
  5. Track Google AI Overviews and AI Mode together. See AI Overviews tracking tools and Goodie alternatives if you are shopping platforms.

How we compiled these statistics

We fetched primary sources on October 19, 2026 and recorded 58 data points in docs/content/stats-ledgers/google-ai-overviews-statistics.json. Every numbered figure above maps to a ledger row with a verbatim quote. Pew figures describe 900 U.S. adults in KnowledgePanel Digital for March 2025 searches. Google user and geography figures are company statements on earnings calls, the Search blog and the June 2026 investor presentation. Cloudflare figures cover a news-related customer cohort on its network, not all publishers. Ahrefs figures come from its keyword and Brand Radar indexes and are not a census of all Google searches.
