AI Referral Traffic Statistics 2026: 1.08% Share, 23x Conversions

AI referrals are about 1% of visits but convert far better: 83% more revenue per retail visit, 23x sign-ups at Ahrefs. 60+ stats from primary sources.

datastatisticsai-searchgeoanalytics

A data roundup of how much traffic ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude and Copilot send to websites, and how those visitors behave and convert. Every figure comes from the company that measured it: Microsoft Clarity, Adobe Digital Insights, Conductor, Ahrefs, Semrush, Cloudflare, Pew Research Center and Vercel.

AI referral traffic is still small, at about 1.08% of all website visits across 10 industries in Conductor’s 2025 benchmark, but it converts far better than most channels: Adobe measured 83% higher revenue per visit from AI traffic to U.S. retailers in September 2026, and Ahrefs got 12.1% of its sign-ups from 0.5% of its visitors (Conductor, Adobe, Ahrefs). Use this page if you need to size AI referrals against search, explain them to leadership, or set a benchmark for your own analytics. Skip it if you want visit totals for individual AI apps; those are on our ChatGPT statistics and Perplexity statistics pages. To see your own AI referrals by engine and landing page, Mentionova’s AI traffic analytics reads GA4 and splits ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot and Claude out of the Referral bucket. Every figure below has a verbatim quote in our ledger.

How much traffic does AI send to websites?

Every large dataset puts AI referrals between about a quarter of a percent and just over 1% of total visits. The spread comes from who is measured: Conductor looks at large enterprise brands, Ahrefs at a broad panel of sites using its analytics, and Clarity at publishers.

  1. AI referrals made up 1.08% of all website traffic across 10 industries from May to September 2025 (Conductor).
  2. Conductor’s dataset covered more than 3.3 billion sessions, of which more than 35.7 million came from LLMs and chatbots, across 1,215 enterprise domains (Conductor).
  3. AI referral traffic grows around 1% month over month on average, per Conductor (Conductor).
  4. AI traffic averaged 0.25% of a site’s total traffic in June 2025 across the 81,947 sites in Ahrefs’ study (Ahrefs).
  5. All AI chatbots combined sent 3.5 million visitors to 74,752 tracked sites in March 2026, or 0.28% of their traffic (Ahrefs).
  6. AI referrals were still under 1% of overall traffic on the 1,200+ publisher and news sites Clarity measured (Microsoft Clarity).
  7. In Clarity’s 2026 behaviour study, the AI Platform channel was under 1% of sessions, against 23.25% for organic search and 24.80% for direct (Microsoft Clarity).
  8. Unattributed traffic was 33.34% of sessions in the same study, which is where some hidden AI visits end up (Microsoft Clarity).
  9. Google was still the top referral source at 39.35% of all referral traffic in Ahrefs’ June 2025 study (Ahrefs).
  10. Google sent 210x more traffic than the big three AI platforms combined, down from 345x in March 2025 (Ahrefs).
  11. Google’s referral share on Ahrefs’ chatbot panel fell from 35.11% in June 2025 to 30.53% in March 2026 (Ahrefs).

How much do AI crawlers take compared with what they send?

Cloudflare’s crawl-to-refer ratio counts HTML page requests from a platform’s crawlers for every HTML page visit it refers back. Native apps often strip the Referer header, so the ratios overstate the gap somewhat.

  1. Crawl-to-refer ratios for June 19 to 26, 2025 ranged from Anthropic’s 70,900:1 to Mistral’s 0.1:1 (Cloudflare).
  2. Anthropic went from 286,930 crawls per human visitor in January 2025 to 38,065 in July (Cloudflare).
  3. Perplexity went the other way, from 54 to 195 crawls per human visitor (Cloudflare).
  4. OpenAI’s ratio dropped from 1,217 to 1,091 crawls per visitor, and Microsoft’s held near 40 (38.5 to 40.7) (Cloudflare).
  5. 80% of AI crawling over 12 months was for training, 18% for search and 2% for user actions (Cloudflare).
  6. Anthropic’s crawl-to-refer ratio reached as much as 500,000:1 in 2025, while Google’s rose from just over 3:1 to as high as 30:1 (Cloudflare).

Why AI referrals are undercounted

  1. Clarity identifies AI referrals from known referral patterns; if the source is hidden, the visit can show up as Direct (Microsoft Learn). Clarity’s AI channel also counts only standalone apps like chatgpt.com and copilot.microsoft.com, not AI features inside search engines.
  2. Adobe’s retail benchmark covers more than 1 trillion visits to U.S. retail sites, 100 million SKUs and 18 product categories, which is why its numbers are the most stable (Adobe).
  3. 39% of U.S. consumers have used AI for online shopping and 85% of them say it improved the experience (Adobe).
  4. 66% of Adobe’s survey respondents believe AI tools give accurate results (Adobe).

What to do with this data

  • Split AI out of Referral. GA4 doesn’t give AI its own default channel, so build an AI segment or use a tool that does it for you. Mentionova’s AI traffic analytics does this from GA4 with no pixel; our AI traffic analytics tools ranking compares the options.
  • Judge AI by conversions, not sessions. It is a small channel by volume, and the datasets above all show it punching above its weight on sign-ups and revenue.
  • Expect undercounting. Apps that strip the referrer push AI visits into Direct or Unattributed, so your real AI share is likely higher than your report shows.
  • Track the answers that create the clicks. Clicks only come after a citation. Mentionova tracks ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Gemini, Google AI Overviews and Reddit from $99/mo billed annually, and our AI visibility tools and AI citation tracking tools rankings compare the alternatives.
  • Fix friction on high-intent pages. AI visitors land deep and go straight to pricing and sign-up flows, so test those pages first.

Definitions

  • AI referral traffic: visits that arrive by clicking a link inside an AI assistant’s answer, such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude or Copilot.
  • AI Platform / Paid AI Platform: Microsoft Clarity’s two AI channels, for organic links and for ads shown inside AI chat experiences.
  • Conversion rate: the share of visits that complete a goal, such as a sign-up, subscription or purchase.
  • Revenue per visit: total revenue divided by visits, used by Adobe to compare AI and non-AI retail traffic.
  • Quick back: Clarity’s signal for a visitor who leaves a page almost immediately after landing.
  • Rage click: repeated rapid clicks on the same spot, a sign of friction.
  • Crawl-to-refer ratio: Cloudflare’s count of crawler page requests per page visit referred back to the site.
  • Self-attributed sign-up: a new user who names a source in a “how did you hear about us” question.

Frequently asked questions

What percentage of website traffic comes from AI?

About 1%. Conductor measured 1.08% across 10 industries in 2025; Ahrefs’ panel put it at 0.25% to 0.28%; Clarity found under 1% on publisher sites.

Which AI platform sends the most traffic?

ChatGPT. It supplied 87.4% of AI referrals in Conductor’s benchmark and more than 80% in Ahrefs’ panel. Gemini and Copilot lead only in a few industries.

In current data, yes. Adobe saw AI retail traffic convert 90% better in September 2026, Ahrefs saw a 23x higher rate, and Semrush values an LLM visitor at 4.4x an organic visitor.

How fast is AI referral traffic growing?

Fast but slowing as it scales: Adobe saw 393% growth in Q1 2026 and 71% in September 2026, while Clarity measured 22% over the six months to March 2026.

Which industries get the most AI traffic?

Information Technology (2.80%) and Consumer Staples (1.91%). Inside IT, semiconductors reach 4.09% and software 3.37%.

Do AI Overviews reduce clicks?

Pew found Google users clicked a regular result in 8% of visits with an AI summary versus 15% without, and clicked a link inside the summary in 1% of visits.

Why does GA4 show so little AI traffic?

GA4 files AI visits under Referral, and apps that strip the referrer show up as Direct. Microsoft documents the same limit for Clarity’s AI channel.

How do I track AI referral traffic?

Use a GA4 segment for AI referrer domains, Clarity’s AI Platform channel, or an AI traffic analytics tool such as Mentionova that splits visits by engine and landing page.

Do AI crawlers send traffic back?

Far less than they take. Cloudflare measured Anthropic at 38,065 crawls per referred visit in July 2025, OpenAI at 1,091 and Perplexity at 195.

Will AI traffic overtake search traffic?

Not yet. Google still sent 210x more traffic than the big three AI platforms in mid-2025. Semrush projects AI could pass search for marketing topics by early 2028.

How we compiled these statistics

We fetched 16 primary source pages from Microsoft, Adobe, Conductor, Ahrefs, Semrush, Cloudflare, Pew Research Center and Vercel on November 4, 2026 and recorded 71 data points in docs/content/stats-ledgers/ai-referral-traffic-statistics.json. Every numbered figure above maps to a ledger row with a verbatim quote from the page we fetched. Each source measured its own data: Clarity and Adobe from their analytics platforms, Conductor and Ahrefs from customer and panel sites, Pew from a browsing panel, and Ahrefs and Vercel from their own sign-ups. We left out market-report sites, traffic-panel estimates and figures we couldn’t trace to the original publisher. Projections are labelled as projections.
